I did South Beach and lost 12 lbs. Phase 1 was tough for me, but I stuck to it and it really does work. I got back on it when I need to lose a few lbs after a party or vacation. I really don't feel hungry, but I want to eat. It's probably all mental.

South Beach is the healthiest diet plan I've ever used.

Tons of vegetables even in Phase 1, many of which provide vitamin C. There is meat, veggies and fudgesicles from the beginning and the short 2 week elimination of grains and fruit is a challenge the first few days, BUT any change of habit is.

Re: the quick weight loss during the first 2 weeks, I felt that it was from water. I think that the refined carbs cause water retention and by stopping them we lose the fluid build-up. Losing the fluid is quite a healthy thing to do. I would also guess that many who begin this diet were not eating anywhere near this healthy prior to it.

People who eat refined carbs will often notice that by middle age that is the mainstay of their diet, not the fruits and grains they are eliminating for a short two week period on the way to getting healthy.

I like SouthBeach much better than Atkins. The difference between the two diets is... The South Beach Diet is not quantitative about carb counts. There is no target number of carbs per day.

The point of South Beach is just to eliminate high glycemic index foods and break the craving cycle. South Beach (once you pass through the

initial two weeks) allows a variety of very "carby" foods that an Atkins follower might shun - such as whole grain breads or whole wheat pasta or sweet potatoes - but suggests that you limit your use of them to one or two servings a day.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a healthy way to lose weight.
